Diaries, essay, and list of essays in a notebook by Charles K. Bolton, librarian, antiquary, and author. Diaries in 13 volumes cover years 1875-1950; they include photographs, newsclippings, some letters, anecdotes about brahman society, and much commentary on daily activities, friends, family, and current happenings such as the events of the two World Wars. Bolton, born in Cleveland in 1867, married Ethel Stanwood in 1897 and had two sons, Stanwood Knowles and Geoffrey. Bolton was the librarian of the Boston Athenaeum for 35 years, a member of the Massachusetts Historical Society for 48 years, and a member of numerous other historical organizations. He also served as vice-president of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The collection includes a typescript essay on Massachusetts Weather from 1620-1720 (1949) and a listing of Bolton's essays in a separate notebook.

This pen and ink drawing is based on an original watercolor drawing by William Walker now in the Boston Athenaeum's Prints & Photographs Department. Walker's watercolor was commissioned by Charles E.
